Hair thinning is the major concern of both men and women nowadays. To cure this issue hair transplant is very beneficial. Hair loss on the scalp most commonly takes place due to a condition known as androgenic alopecia. Hair first start to thin and eventually lead to baldness. But have you ever experienced small round or oval patches of the scalp where there are absolutely no hair and something that happens all of a sudden? These small patches take place due to a condition known as alopecia areata. The condition affects a significant number of people, most of whom experience it under 30. Let’s dig in a little further to better understand this type of hair loss.
What is alopecia areata?
It is an autoimmune disease that cause hair loss on the scalp and other parts of the body. Generally hair suddenly fall away and a bald patch is created. In most cases, the hair return on the spot in about twelve months. However, in some cases, the loss may be permanent. The skin in the affected area remains more or less the same. Itching can take place though very occasionally. Most people do not show any additional symptoms.
Usually the patches are small in size but in rare cases, all of the hair on the head can be lost. This rare condition is known as alopecia totalis. The condition can also affect a person beyond the scalp. In extremely rare cases, it can remove all the hair on the body. The condition is known as alopecia universalis.
What causes it?
The exact factors behind the condition are not fully known, but to some extent it is a genetic condition. People whose at least one parent suffers from the condition has a higher likelihood to suffer from alopecia areata.
People with asthma, Down syndrome and certain other health conditions are also more likely to develop this problem. Too much stress may also be a contributing factor though it has not been confirmed yet through research. Imbalance in thyroid secretions is another important factor behind alopecia areata.
Is there a cure?
The condition currently has no cure and the doctors mostly work to help control flare-ups. Research to counter this condition is underway. There are certain medications that can be used to stop future hair loss to some degree. These include Minoxidil, Finasteride, cortisone creams and corticosteroids. Usually people are able to regain lost hair after a while.
Can hair transplant be done?
Hair transplant can be performed on patients that suffer from alopecia areata but it is expected to have little effect. If the condition affects the same area again, the transplanted hair are unable to stand it and will undergo further hair loss. This does not happen in hair loss that is caused by male pattern baldness but alopecia areata is a different issue altogether. People with extensive hair loss caused by the condition can take good advantage from the hair restoration systems which are the next best thing after a hair transplantation in Dubai.
